In fashion and in life, comfort is a fine line. Too much of it will suck your passion and creativity dry, making personal growth nearly impossible. I mean, c’mon, is there anything worse than falling victim to your own comfort zone?
Personal growth is uncomfortable, intimidating, and awkward. If it were that easy, we’d all be effing superstars (not that you aren’t fabulous already). Imagine being in Destiny’s Child but being Michelle instead of Beyoncé (#sorrynotsorry). Fabulous, but still not a superstar. Get it? If you’re staring at your screen thinking I WANT TO BE QUEEN BE, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve all gotten lost in our comfort zones, but here you are making the first step to stepping outside of yours. While it takes time and effort, below are a few tips on stepping outside of your comfort zone to get you started.
3 Tips of Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone
1. Read an Inspirational Book
We spend so much time habitually scrolling through social media, getting caught up in perception, and clogging our minds with (what seems to be) everyone else’s perfect lives. Although I love social media, its made it possible and common to dwell on other’s lifestyles instead of focusing on ways to improve your own.
Grab an inspirational book to kill the spare time on your lunch break or commute home. I know it sounds cheesy, but I promise there are actually a lot of good reads that will inspire you. If you follow me on the gram, you know I’m currently reading You Are A Bad Ass by Jen Sincero and I love it. It really lights a fire under my a** for lack of better terminology. A few other good ones are Think and Grow Rich, How to Win Friends and Influence People, and The Power of Positive Thinking.
2. Work Out
Exercise gives us confidence and confidence allows us to tackle new goals. Confidence is a huge factor when it comes to stepping outside of your comfort zone. Working out will not only give you the confidence you need, but will also teach you about the persistence and hard work needed to achieve your goals.
If you aren’t already doing some form of exercise, you really should start…like YESTERDAY! “But Arta, I hate going to the gym,” you say? Do something else! If you aren’t sure what that something else is, here’s $30 off your first month of ClassPass to help you decide. Exercise will give you a smoking body, make you feel great, and push you to do MORE. What are you waiting for?
3. Do 1 thing that scares you every week
This sound so LAME, I almost puked writing it. The most cliché thing someone will ever tell you. Truth is, people say that shiz because IT WORKS. It doesn’t matter what it is – just do something..anything. If you’re scared of heights, try rock-climbing, going to the top of a skyscraper, or going on a high hike. If you’re scared of talking to people, make it a point to say hi to a stranger. GET COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE. Before you know it, you’ll be unstoppable.
The look I shot for this post serves as the perfect example. I always blow-dry or curl my hair for shoots. My natural hair is frizzy and out of control, IMO. It was super uncomfortable, but Ramsey convinced me to just shoot with my natural hair (while it was still WET, literal nightmare), instead of taking forever to blow-dry it. I ended up loving the way these shots turned out and will definitely be giving my natural locks more of a chance moving forward.
