Chilling in Chambray

Like its denim sister, chambray is the best excuse for a colorful neutral. WTF is a colorful neutral, you ask? It isn’t quite any shade of black, white, or brown, but still goes with all of the above. Its basically one of fashion’s greatest contributions to society.

While denim has been a huge part of my wardrobe since I could dress myself, I’m a bit of a newbie in the chambray department. To be honest, I just recently learned there is even a difference. Turns out, they both use the same fabric but are woven differently. Chambray uses traditional criss-cross weave, while denim is woven diagonally. You’ll notice the underside of denim is much lighter.

Especially for the warmer seasons, its is a great alternative to denim. Its usually lighter (both in color and weight) and more breathable than denim, making it perfect for those hot, humid days. Denim is thick and hot AF for the most part. Unlike denim, however, you DO have to iron chambray. The breathable material is so worth it, though. You’ll catch me sporting this fabric all summer long.

My Chambray Look

I found this adorable chambray shift dress at Tobi. I love the fringe details and front pockets on this one. The shape is perfect for any occasion, whether you’re just strolling through the city or going into the office.

I paired my dress with brown and black over the knee boots, a leather jacket, and gold accessories. This was actually a day to night look for me. I wore it out all day in Brooklyn and also for dinner in meatpacking that evening. For a more casual look, I’d pair the dress with ankle booties or even a pair of cute kicks.\
