How to Naturally Fight A Cold

naturally fighting a cold

Getting sick is the worst. I lied.. Having someone in your house get sick is the worst. Whether your roommates are family, friends, randos, or your significant other, its hard to avoid being next on the hit list.

If you’ve been following along my insta-stories (@theartafacts), you know Ramsey’s been sick  for the past week and I’ve spent most of my days nursing my poor baby back to health. I thought my body was strong enough to skip this round, but I definitely overestimated my immune system. We’re both anti antibiotics so unless its absolutely necessary, we avoid the doctors office. Letting your body naturally fight a cold, rather than blasting it with antibiotics, builds a strong immune system and helps you avoid getting sick in the future. The common cold only lasts about a week, so if you can, ride it out. We cheated a little bit with NyQuil and Advil, but only to get a good night’s rest.

There are a few things that are major key when nursing yourself back to health – hippie style. I’ve put together a list of tips and items to help you guys! I’ll also be adding some recipes to the blog this week.

Happy healing xx

1. Avoid Dairy and Processed Sugar

Dairy facilitates mucus build up, which is horrible when you’re sick. If you like the way ice cream feels on your throat, put a banana in the freezer for a bit and then throw it in the blender with unsweetened almond milk.

Processed sugar causes inflammation and weakens your immune system. It’s no bueno – so stay away. I avoid processed sugar even when I am not stick. Its horrible for you. Your skin, immune system, and pretty much everything else suffer from it.

2. Hydrate x1million

One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. F. Batmanghelidj and says, “You’re not sick; you’re thirsty. Don’t treat thirst with medication.” While you MIGHT be sick, colds can often be avoided and dealt with by consistently flushing your body of toxins and bacteria. However, not all water is created equal. When you’re sick, your body is trying to alkalize its pH level. Drinking pH balanced water, like Core, will give your body that extra helping hand. On the other hand, drinking water that tests highly acidic might help flush your system, but won’t necessarily help you fight the cold.

3. Vitamin C

Emergen-C, oranges, lemons, and any other citrus will be your best friends. If you don’t start your mornings with lemon water already, now would be a good time to get that going. Half a lemon squeezed in a glass of water – super simple. I recommend drinking an Emergen-C once or twice a day, putting a lot of lemon in your tea, and eating tons of citrus fruit. The fruit will also add natural sugar into your system and curb your cravings.

4. Raw Local Honey

This one might be a bit pricey depending on where you live, but totally worth it. Raw local honey will introduce local pollen back into your system. This helps you build immunity to the bacteria or “the bug” that may be lingering in your local hood. Its also antibacterial and full of antioxidants, killing off unwanted bacteria and fungus (yuck and yay).

5. Apple Cider Vinegar

Ahh, every hippie’s pantry staple. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) helps alkalize your body, fight off germs, and give you energy. It isn’t easy to drink, I must admit, but it seriously works! If you’re congested, try adding 1/8 cup of ACV to a boiling pot of water and inhaling the steam. Also, take 1tbs of ACV as a shot. If you don’t like the flavor, dilute it with some lemon and water.
