THE KNOW | Styling an Edgy Holiday Outfit

I didn’t grow up celebrating Christmas or really anything other than Thanksgiving and New Years at home, but I can’t help loving everything about this time of year. Everyone’s in good spirits, cities light up with beautiful colors at night, and, of course, SO MANY holiday parties. I LOVE me a good Christmas party, but I don’t like girly holiday dresses. SO NOT my jam. Holiday outfit or not, I feel weird and unlike myself.
So, a few years ago, I started finding ways to style holiday outfits with a little more edge. Since I never got presents from Santa, I guess you can say I wasn’t too phased by the thought of a lump of coal! 😛 I’ve put together some tips on nailing your holiday style without looking like too much of a princess 🙂

This look was shot during the day so I paired it with Chelsea boots. Whether it’s a day or night party (or maybe you’re double booking like mad and have both ;)), these tips APPLY. Swap out the Chelsea boots for pumps or heeled booties and, BOOM, you’re good to go.

1. Throw in Sparkle or Velvet

What do you think of when you think of the holidays? I envision sparkly things, velvet ribbons, and white fluff. While you might not want to wear white fluff to a party, sparkle and velvet are great ways to add some holiday spirit into your look. I styled my look with a Zadig & Voltaire boyfriend blazer that has sparkle details on the elbows. A velvet blazer or bodysuit would be other great options.

2. White is a Great Option

If you’re really caught up on the white fluff option, it isn’t exactly impossible. Try rocking a white fuzzy sweater with leather leggings. White is a great holiday option. I’ve really been digging my white J Brand jeans lately – they’re so versatile !

3. Add a turtleneck

Turtlenecks are always a sure sign of winter. They’re also super easy to coordinate with the above two tips. Since it isn’t too cold in San Diego, I chose a semi sheer turtle neck.

Throw on a bling-y holiday necklace with a velvet skirt and a faux fur coat if you’re feeling supa fabulous. The possibilities are endless. A black turtleneck should be a bare essential in your winter wardrobe. It’s a perfect base for any type of look, easy for layering, and great when putting together a bad ass holiday outfit.

4. Red Lipstick

I’m one of those people who likes lipstick on everyone but myself. Red lipstick is one of the most simple holiday accessories. I like it because it’s feminine, but not girly. On the rare occasions that I do wear red lips, I go for my Nars Cruella Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (see below). I got it for my birthday from Sephora once and have been so hooked since. This is coming from a person who, again, doesn’t ever wear lipstick – so you know it’s the good good.

How do you like to spice up your holiday look?
